Reading and open mic November 6
Rivertown Poets Announces November 6th Reading and Open Mic
November 6 @ 6:15 pm - 8:15 pm
Dear Friends in Poetry,
Please join us on Monday, November 6th at 6:15 p.m. for our November poetry reading, featuring poets Kim Shuck, Poet Laureate of San Francisco, and Lee Slonimsky, a prolific poet from New York.
After the features, we'll host our wonderful open mic. Reading time is three minutes per person.
Come early for good seating and open mic slots.
Kim Shuck has been talking story since very early in life and shows no signs of giving it up. She has most of the accomplishments one would expect of a writer. She’s won awards, been published in journals, anthologies and a handful of her own books. This year she was named the 7th Poet Laureate for the city of San Francisco and is still wondering what that was about. These days she writes many tiny autobiographies and has her picture taken more often than is comfortable.
Lee Slonimsky's eighth and latest book is Lion, Gnat from Spuyten Duyvil Press. The poet Pui Ying Wong writes that it "soars above the clamor of modern life…these poems argue vigorously that not only is nature man's origin, but also his destiny." Lee's poems have appeared in The Carolina Quarterly, Measure, The New York Times and Poetry Daily. He is also the author of a mystery novel about the hedge fund industry, Bermuda Gold. On November 8, Lee will be conducting a poetry writing workshop at the Healdsburg Center for the Arts, entitled "The Poetry of Looking Out the Window."

Paseo Artistico- Puerto Rico and Beyond
The Mission has traditionally celebrated independent artists and supported Latin American leftists. In that spirit, from Do-it-yourself artists to experimental media, graffiti artists, poetry readings, film and print screening, join us in standing in solidarity with communities in Puerto Rico and beyond.
Given recent natural disasters, this month we charge our spirit of solidarity by raising consciousness and monetary funds to support Puerto Rico through local grassroots organizations.

Vos Sin Tinta
Voz Sin Tinta is back for August with Honored guest and reader, San Francisco Poet Laureate Kim Shuck.
As always, open mic to follow after the break. Come early to get on the list as we anticipate this will be a big night.
Bios:
Kim Shuck embraces the fool and jester qualities of being a modern poet and artist. She is a devotee of San Francisco, whose hills she wanders nearly always on foot. Her maternal grandparents met at the Polish Hall on Shotwell and she spent many hours with her mother and grandmother wandering the Mission St. Miracle Mile, taking books out of the Mission Branch library and watching aquarium fish on the ground floor of what used to be Hale's. She firmly believes in carrying a bubble wand, keys, pen and notebook and cat's cradle string at all times.
Shuck is widely published in journals, anthologies and a couple of solo books. She enjoys volunteering in SFUSD elementary school classrooms to share her loves of origami, poetry and basket making… in other words, math of various kinds. Kim currently also works with students at the California College of Art in the Diversity Department.
Lyndsey Ellis is a St. Louis-born writer who lives and works in Oakland. She received her MFA in Writing from California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Ellis is a VONA/Voices and Squaw Valley Writers' Community alumna. She's a recipient of the 2016 Henry Joseph Jackson award from the San Francisco Foundation. Her work has been anthologized in Golden State 2017: Best New Writing from California and appears in several journals. She's a fan of Afro-Samba dance, Jolly Rancher candies, and thrift stores.
Rocio Ramirez is a published poet and writer. She has published an essay on Sara Estela Ramirez, a woman from the Mexican revolution, as well as poetry with Voz Alta magazine. Rocio has a Masters in Counseling Psychology. She has worked with children and their families as a Play therapist in elementary schools. Rocio loves her family, poetry and her cat Marshmallow. She is always happiest when she is next to the sea.

Major Poetry Event @ Bird and Beckett
Monday, 7:00 to 9:00 -- Three poets, followed by an open mic... our headliner is San Francisco's third poet laureate (2002-2006), the engaging and impassioned devorah major, whose tenure was marked by her effort to bring out the voices of poets from across the City's varied social and economic terrain. devorah joins poet Kim Shuck, whose writing is informed by her native american ancestry, and by Howard Isaac Williams, who, in addition to producing a significant body of poems, has written a sprawling narrative based on the life and legend of Genghis Khan and has studied deeply the history and culture of Afghanistan.

Follow-up comments
Thank you to those people who came to the reading at Gathering Tribes. I had a great time. It's always good fun to meet people I know a little through my work. It was exciting to see people from other shows, to meet folks I've corresponded with for the first time in person and to see some of my crazy busy friends whose schedules never seem to mesh with mine anymore. It's also cool to meet totally new people. The folk at Gathering Tribes were wonderful, thank you Pennie, Michael and Kim for treating my family and me so well. I love my new earrings and actually only left the house this morning to be able to take them for an airing. I encourage everyone to go visit Gathering Tribes... the folk there have great taste, fun senses of humor and a great new space. Thank you all again.
